- LEWIS HALL – NEWCASTLE UNITED
Defender | Hull (h) | 2-1 win
Hall has had a great start to the season, being among the standout performers in many of Newcastle’s opening games so far while having a lot to offer the team both in defence and going forward.
Newcastle made a very quick start in their game, scoring twice in the opening seven minutes, the second of which was scored by Hall, and the home side were getting the better of Hull for the first 60 or so minutes before the momentum of the game completely flipped, once the Tigers got their goal it was real backs-to-the-wall stuff for Newcastle but they just about scraped through with the three points.
Hall’s goal came on the transition, where he won the ball just past the halfway line, the left back continued his run and received the ball on the edge of the Hull box before slotting it into the far corner of the net.
Hall had the most touches in the match with 113 and was only dispossessed four times, always looking assured in possession and with 10 defensive contributions across the 90 the defender looked very solid and continues to prove what an asset he is to the Magpies.
- JANNIK SCHUSTER
Defender | Chelsea (h) | 3-0 win
What a result it was for Brentford in the Friday night game. The Bees dominated Chelsea from start to finish in the game with the away side not really seeing a sight of goal the whole game and that comes from an incredibly good defensive base.
It is the Austrian’s first season in the Premier League, and this being his first real standout performance, he recorded more defensive contributions than anyone else, 16 in total including 12 clearances.
His assist led to the opener for Brentford just after the hour mark from a corner. He made first contact on the delivery and headed the ball back across the goal for Jaidon Anthony where it was impossible for him to miss.
This performance will have Schuster hoping his starting spot is nailed down, having come off the bench three times already this season, and with Nathan Collins being injured for the time being this performance makes a strong argument for it.
- ANTOINE SEMENYO – MANCHESTER CITY
Attacker | Sunderland (h) | 5-3 win
The Manchester City man was so clinical in this goal-heavy game and was exactly what the Citizens needed to come out on top.
Man City came into this game undefeated and this weekend was always going to be a challenge for them with this Sunderland team in high spirits. What a game it turned out to be for the neutral, there were some defensive mistakes from both sides but that makes it all the better to watch (unless you are a fan of either team, in which case I can imagine it was massively stressful)
The Ghanaian winger was responsible for two goals and an assist and only needed two shots throughout the game to come up with these. He was immensely clinical and a worry all game, creating three chances (a number only bettered by one player) to test the Sunderland defence.
He assisted the second City goal after an attempted clearance fell to him on the edge of the box, he played it to Cherki, who coolly placed his shot into the net through two defenders.
His first goal was just before half-time, when pressure in the box from Man City paid off where the ball dropped very nicely for Semenyo who drilled it first-time past Roefs in goal.
His final goal involvement came from another defensive mix-up where Cherki’s ball forwards bounces in between two Sunderland defenders and right into the path of Semenyo who makes no mistake firing the ball into the bottom right corner.
It was a very clinical performance from the winger who opened his Premier League account for the season and everything seemed to drop for him in the right moments but sometimes good players just make their own luck.
- BRIAN BROBBEY – SUNDERLAND
Attacker | Man City (a) | 5-3 loss
He was always going to make the list after the first Premier League hat-trick scored by a Sunderland player in over 10 years.
I was debating which Sunderland player to put here on the list, having to pick between Brobbey or Enzo Le Fee. The latter of who I thought looked a real threat on the Sunday afternoon with him playing major parts in two of the Sunderland goals and created five chances on the day, more than anyone else.
I did pick Brobbey in the end, the Dutchman was immense and clinical when called upon in the game, with his three goals needing just five shots.
The attacker had the beating of Ruben Dias the whole game, with the Portuguese man never really being able to compete with the physicality of and whenever Brobbey had the opportunity to hold up the ball he found a teammate.
His first goal came after a great pass from Le Fee left him one-on-one with Donnarumma which he coolly dispatched into the bottom corner.
His second came just after the half-hour mark after he received the ball to tap it home into an empty net after Meunier’s cutback across the box.
He completed the hat-trick just before the hour mark after Angulo rolled it across the box once again for him to slot home.
Overall, it was some way to open his account for the season and despite the result not going his way, it was a very imposing performance that I’m sure he will be looking to build on after the international break.
- PASCAL GROß – BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION
Midfielder | Arsenal (h) | 3-0 win
It was a toss-up between Brobbey and I am really giving it to Groß because of the shock nature of Brighton’s win against Arsenal and how assured they were in it (Okay, I’ll admit also a bit of bias, but that doesn’t make the Brighton star any less deserving)
The German makes the list again, he really is in tremendous form at the minute and he played a starring role in a supremely confident Brighton display against, up until now, what was looking like a mighty Arsenal team.
Again the whole Brighton team were just outstanding and to pick just one was difficult as there really was never a sense they were going to lose the game.
At 35 years old Groß covered more ground than anyone else while also supplying a Goal and an assist for his team.
He struck the first goal for his team just past the hour mark, when no one closed him down on the edge of the box and with a great finish beat Raya with a low shot into the far corner.
His assist came from a corner just before the hour mark with a great delivery onto the head of Chema Andres for the third goal.
He carries on his incredible start to the season that includes seven direct goal contributions in eight games, a super return and he has already beaten his totals for last season.
