- Ricardo Calafiori
Leeds proved a tough test for Arsenal in the early kickoff on Saturday. It was Leeds who broke the deadlock just before the hour mark and it was Calafiori himself who struck back for the Gunners just seven minutes later.
The goal is not the only reason the Italian is featured in this list but his all-round game was very solid and exactly what the home side needed.
He created two chances, made four defensive contributions and is so important for what Arsenal want to do in possession. He is so energetic down the left flank, covering over 10km through the game and very often appearing in attacking positions.
His goal was where he found himself in the right place at the right time, getting onto the end of Ben White’s header back across the box and meeting it on the six-yard box where he was unmarked and tapped it into the net past Trafford.
- Walter Benitez
The Argentinian once again was starting in the absence of Dean Henderson and had a very impressive afternoon, helping Palace to their second win of the league this season.
Nottingham Forest were on top for the majority of this game and the fact Palace came out with the win is very impressive. Partly down to how clinical they were in the right moments, but also thanks to some big saves from Benitez.
Three saves were made during the match, probably the most notable being the save from Delap from inside the six-yard box.
He commanded his box well and looked assured when needed to be called upon
- Bobby Thomas
I mean who really saw this coming – not even the most hopeful Coventry fan would’ve predicted this outcome. A 4-1 win at home is an incredible result for the newly promoted side.
While it would seem sensible to choose an attacker from a team with four goals I am going with the centre back.
The English player made a crucial block just ahead of halftime that kept the home side on front and outside of that was just everywhere at the back for Coventry.
22 defensive contributions, and 16 clearances. 16!
Despite what the scoreline could suggest Coventry needed to do a lot of defending throughout the game and Thomas definitely stepped up when needed.
- Jeremy Doku
Simply electric from the Belgian this week at Anfield,
Anderson was a definite consideration, but for me Doku made the real difference even if he only came on in the 56th minute.
There was so much talk ahead of the game, as there was always going to be, so much controversy around all of the charges and the pressure of the first game being away at Anfield was going to pile so much pressure onto Man City.
It was a very cagey affair with no real chances for the first 45.
Doku came on and was exactly what City needed; he kicked it all off after being fouled by Gravenberch leading to the Liverpool man getting a second yellow card.
The Belgian’s next major involvement played a major part in the first City goal, cutting in off the left wing, unleashing a shot which deflected straight into the path of Haaland.
His goal is a moment of pure class, cutting in from the left again and curling a peach of a ball into the far corner.
His pace and 1-on-1 ability proved too much for Liverpool on the afternoon, what an incredible cameo.
- Jordan Henderson
I mean who really saw this coming?
It was a dominant display from Chelsea for the whole of the 90 minutes, five goals getting their season well underway again after the international break.
Henderson was a name very few people would’ve had as a standout this week but his quality through the game was undeniable.
The England international scored twice and provided an assist, both of his goals being excellent strikes.
Adding to this he covered the most distance in the game and had eight defensive contributions – really making this an all-round game.
His first one would open Chelsea’s account for the afternoon in just the second minute of the game, a beautifully hit shot from the edge of the box that kept drifting away from the goalkeeper before grazing the inside of the post and into the net.
His assist came just seconds after his first goal, laying a ball off to teammate Morgan Rogers who curled an effort into the far top right corner.
His second was a free kick that was hit perfectly out of the goalkeeper’s reach into the far side of the net.
This may not have been what Chelsea had in mind when they signed him, but it will be more than welcome from their point of view.
